Vercel Sandbox

Answer in brief

Firecracker microVM sandboxes on Vercel’s infrastructure, persistent by default and billed on active CPU, with fine-grained egress control. A polished microVM sandbox with standout egress and billing design; the obvious pick for Vercel-centric teams.

Overview

Vercel Sandbox runs code in Firecracker microVMs on Vercel’s infrastructure and has been generally available since January 2026. Sandboxes are persistent by default: the filesystem is snapshotted on stop and restored on resume, so a coding agent can pick up where it left off.

Two features stand out for agent security and cost: a firewall with credential brokering that injects secrets at the network layer so they never enter the sandbox, and active-CPU billing that charges CPU only while code is actually running — useful when agents spend most of their time waiting on a model.

Notable

  • Generally available since January 30, 2026.
  • Used in production by v0, Blackbox AI and RooCode per Vercel’s GA announcement.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • You deploy on Vercel or use the AI SDK
  • You want secrets brokered outside the sandbox
  • Your agents idle while waiting on models and you want active-CPU billing
  • You want persistent-by-default microVMs

Trade-offs

  • No GPU support documented
  • Hosted only — no self-hosting or BYOC
  • Hobby sessions capped at 45 minutes

Best for: Teams on Vercel and agent builders who want microVM isolation, active-CPU billing and credential brokering.
